Research
What rules govern work, how do they shape workers’ opportunities, and how can we measure them?
My research connects questions about power in labor markets with the measurement of organizational practices. I study how employment rules, institutional conditions, and technology shape worker mobility and the organization of work.
A central challenge is that the practices governing a workplace are often difficult to observe. I use text from job postings and organizational documents to build data that make those practices available for empirical research. Developing open tools is part of this agenda: it allows other researchers to inspect, repeat, and extend the work.
Research themes
Open tools for workforce research and information
My current work connects descriptions of work to shared task and skill vocabularies, enabling researchers and institutions to build and evaluate workforce information.
Employer power, worker mobility, and employment institutions
How do the rules governing employment shape workers’ options and employers’ power? My work examines guest-worker programs, wage theft, and restrictions on mobility.
Technology and the organization of work
My research examines how technological supervision and changes in where work takes place reshape employment relationships.
Projects and future directions
The balance of power in franchising
Who controls a franchise business? In The Balance of Power in Franchising, my coauthors and I analyze contractual provisions across 4,500 chains from 2009–2024 and survey more than 300 franchisees. We find a systematic shift toward franchisor control over pricing, suppliers, product offerings, and competition after contracts end. Greater control is accompanied by higher franchise fees, without faster chain growth or fewer complaints to the Federal Trade Commission. Chains adopting provisions favoring franchisors are also more likely to be acquired by private equity. The findings connect contractual authority, business autonomy, and the changing organization of work.

Workforce information and matching
The project From job postings to workforce information with open tools, currently a work in progress, examines how descriptions of work can be converted into comparable measures and evaluated against external benchmarks. A future direction is to connect descriptions of workers’ experience with job requirements in ways that support more efficient matching in labor markets. Public project companion With Stephen Meisenbacher and Svetlozar Nestorov.
Collaborative research infrastructure
These projects bring together researchers across management, economics, law, information systems, and computer science. I develop tools and data with their reuse in mind, and involve students in the work of constructing and evaluating evidence.
